Laser Cavity Detectors

Reviewed by: Paul Selinger, DMD

Laser cavity detectors have been hailed as “the greatest advance in dental diagnostics since the X-ray.”

Detailed Information:

Laser technology allows dentists to find very small cavities years before they would show up on an X-ray. The laser cavity detector also eliminates the need for the dentist to probe the patient’s teeth with a dental explorer. The device works by sending laser light energy into the tooth. The light energy is then reflected back, along with a reading of the hardness of the tooth. The dentist can thus distinguish between normal pits and fissures in the tooth and cavities. The laser beam is harmless to surrounding tissues. One limitation of the technique is that it cannot be used around existing silver or tooth colored composite restorations.

Yes it is worth it. As long as the result is that you have whiter teeth.
